CAMOUFLAGE [30 Days of Writing}

So this afternoon a few friends and their kids came over for lunch and spent the afternoon here with us. One of these friends sells Mary Kay products and was showing me some blushes that she had along to sell.

Well, she was showing me all the nice light pink ones but I ended up picking out a bronzer type of color...which she thought was a little strange.

Why would I want some bronzing???

The attitude is often that "white is better" where as I would like to blend in a little sometimes. Maybe some camouflage was my subconscious thought in choosing the color, who knows.

All 5 of us obviously do not blend in though! This picture is proof that I am as pasty as they come. Sure am.

As are our kids. And blonde to boot.

Does dressing up like Mexicans (for Independence Day) help a little???

hmm not so much.

Either way, our skin makes us stand out. As does our hair, our eyes, our Spanish oftentimes, our worldview, to name a few.

We try to fit in as much as possible, to speak as well as we can and acculturate as much as we can. But we know that this will be an ongoing process, keeping in mind we will always be a mixture of two cultures.

It is nice though when people hear your kids or yourself speak Spanish and say they sound Mexican. Or when people are proud of the fact that you like some spice and eat Mexican food and that you salute the Mexican flag.

We will never look the same but that is not what draws people together! It's in the attitudes we have and the love we have for the people.

Nevertheless, I will try my bronzer and occasionally dye my hair a little darker...just for fun.
